THE 2010 World Stone Skimming
Championships will take place on
Easdale Island near Oban in Argyll,
Scotland, on September 26. The com-
petition regularly attracts more than 200
entrants from around the world.
In a rival event, the USA World Stone
Skipping Championships, entries are
judged on the number of times the
stone skips on the water. But in
Scotland, although the stone must hit
the water at least three times, the win-
ner of the skimming championships is
whoever skims the stone the longest
distance. Last year's event was won
with a skim of 54 metres.
The day before the event sees a pre-
skim party in the village hall, built in 1871
as a drill hall for the island's volunteer
force. It is a unique structure, with a
seven-metre high central column sup-
porting a pyramidal slate roof. The col-
umn was originally a ship's mast, gener-
ally agreed to be from the sailing ship
Norval which sank nearby in 1870 while
carrying wood from Montreal to Glasgow.
THIS year sees the North Vietnamese
city of Hanoi mark its 1000th year.
Although there will be festivities throughout
the year, celebrations culminate in a major
festival in October, making it a great time
Hanoi was first established as Vietnam's
capital by Emperor Ly Thai To in 1010. At
that time Hanoi was known as Thang
Long, 'ascending dragon', a reflection of
the victory over the Chinese invading
forces. Its later name of Hanoi derives from
the landscape, meaning city in the bend of
Today Hanoi's peaceful lakes and wide
boulevards give it a serenity not found in
other parts of Vietnam. Nevertheless the
intricate network of narrow streets in the
Old Quarter is still where you'll find tradi-
tional vendors, craftspeople and streetside
