FOR more than 200 years readers have
thrilled to the works of Jane Austen,
endeared by her depictions of life in
English society of the day, and charmed by
the trials, loves, tribulations and foibles of
More recently many of her books have
been translated and adapted into award-
winning films and television programs that
have drawn a new era of devoted followers.
Readers and viewers have marvelled at
the lifestyle and morality of the characters,
and women have swooned at the dashing
males such as Fitzwilliam Darcy (especial-
ly as played by Colin Firth).
For the real aficionado the chance to
'live' the life and style of the Jane Austen
Regency period is not to be missed, and the
Jane Austen Festival in Canberra from
April 15-19 promises to be a real 'bodice-
To be held at historic St John's Church
in Reid, close to the Canberra CBD, the fes-
tival, the third to be held, will feature a
range of events.
Director Aylwen Gardiner-Garden says
the festival will focus on many cultural
aspects from the turn of the 19th century
with singing, dancing, craft, card games,
fencing and a particular focus on traditional
activities such as hand-sewing, embroidery
and bonnet making. You can even learn to
speak in the manner and style of the time.
A number of expert presenters will lead
a wide variety of activities.
Aylwen's husband John, a dance histori-
an, choreographer, musician and band
leader, will present sessions on dances
from Jane Austen's day including country
dances, waltzes, reels and quadrilles.
Every gentlewoman knew how to hand
sew and embroider, and workshops will
include learning the basic art of stitching
(running and basic stitch, rolled hems,
thread buttons) as well as stitches used to
embroider clothes and household items.
Clothes worn during this Regency peri-
od were stylish and elaborate, none more so
than the types of head covering worn at dif-
ferent times of the day.
Turbans, bonnets, muslin caps, evening
headwear (tiaras and diadems) all had
their specific use and place.
"They're simple but elegant and don't
cost much to make," Aylwen said.
The festival's Friday evening formal
event, Dinner with the Dashwoods, will be
a full traditional English roast dinner.
A Grand Regency Ball will take place on
Saturday night, with everyone encouraged
to dress in Regency costume.
You can enjoy a light supper later in the
evening, dancing of the era, card games
and generally have lots of Regency fun!
Sunday morning action will move to his-
toric Blundells Cottage on the shore of Lake
Burley Griffin with a relaxing promenade
in costume to the carillon on Aspen Island.
There have been many adaptations of
Jane Austen's books for stage and screen,
and the last evening will feature a perform-
ance of a new adaptation of Sense and
Sensibility by Jodi McAllister who
received a Community Arts Training nom-
ination in 2009 -- Best Original Work, for
LEFT -- Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle as
Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet in the
TV dramatisation of Pride and Prejudice.
RIGHT -- The Coman family from Rutherglen,
Victoria, looked the part at last year's Jane
Austen Regency Ball.
