THE SENIOR TRAVELLER v April, 2010 15
THE ULTIMATE CRUISE GUIDE SPECIAL HOLIDAY FEATURE
QUEEN Mary 2 will be based in Australia
in 2012 for a history-making circumnav-
igation which will see her visit five states
and the Northern Territory.
Her Royal Circumnavigation of Australia
is a first for Cunard. The company expects
it will generate an economic windfall
around the country.
She will call at eight ports – Sydney,
Fremantle, Adelaide and the Whitsundays
as well as maiden visits to Cairns (Yorkey’s
Knob), Darwin, Melbourne and Brisbane.
There will also be a call at Bali.
Australians will be able to choose from
three circumnavigation options – a 22-night
voyage departing Sydney on February 14,
2012, a 20-night voyage departing Fremantle
on February 8, 2012, and a 21-night voyage
departing Adelaide on February 11, 2012.
In all, Queen Mary 2 will spend 28 nights
in Australian waters as she sails from Cape
Town to Sydney via Fremantle and
Adelaide, and then circumnavigates the
country. As a result, Fremantle, Adelaide
and Sydney will each enjoy two visits from
the liner during her Australian season.
The Australian deployment will be the
longest the liner has been based in one
country outside of her northern hemi-
sphere home ports of Southampton and
Ann Sherry, chief executive of Carnival
Australia which represents Cunard Line in
Australia, said the decision was a sign of
confidence in the Australian cruise market.
The Royal Circumnavigation will go on
sale mid-2010 to allow the final itinerary
details to be finalised. However, Cunard is
now taking expressions of interest at
YOU don’t have to make the trans-
Atlantic crossing to experience the
delights of the Queen Mary 2.
Next year her world cruise offers a
range of opportunities including travel-
ling from Capetown to Sydney, Sydney
to Singapore, and Sydney to
Queen Mary 2, which was recently in
Sydney, returns next February for vis-
its to Sydney, Adelaide and Fremantle
on her extraordinary world cruise.
For example, you can board in
Fremantle on February 17 and cruise to
Singapore or you can board in Adelaide
on February 20 and travel to Hong
Her Sydney visit will include a mem-
orable royal rendezvous with Cunard’s
new Queen Elizabeth.
Queen Mary 2 will be impossible to
miss on Sydney Harbour. Towering
about 62 metres above the water line
she is equal to the height of a 23-storey
building. Her signs near the funnel are
the largest illuminated ship name signs
in maritime history, stretching 22
metres long and 2.4 metres high.
Hallmarks of nostalgia, opulence
and style define her. Seven hundred
English scones are served at High Tea
each afternoon and annual tea con-
sumption would fill an Olympic size
swimming pool – 6000 cups of tea are
served daily. Her library is the largest at
sea with more than 8000 hardbacks, 500
paperbacks, 200 audio books and 100 CD
